Amazon to close three of its warehouses in the UK, impacting 1,200 jobs

Amazon says it will shut down three warehouses – located in Hemel Hampstead, Doncaster, and Gourock – in the United Kingdom, resulting in the loss of 1,200 jobs.

However, the company has stated that employees will be given the opportunity to transfer to other units within the company.

This move comes as Amazon aims to restructure its business globally, shedding 18,000 jobs, as it anticipates slower growth due to high inflation and reduced spending by consumers and businesses. The closure of these warehouses is not part of the broader restructuring that primarily affects non-warehouse roles in e-commerce and human resources.

Despite this setback, the company has announced plans to open two new warehouses in central and northeastern England over the next three years, which is expected to create 2,500 new jobs. Amazon currently operates 30 large warehouses across the United Kingdom.

The closure of these warehouses and loss of jobs will undoubtedly come as a significant blow to the affected employees and their families. Amazon has stated that it will be working closely with the affected employees to support them during the transition process.
