Moroccan Startup DataPathology Secures $1 Million for African Expansion

In much of Africa, there is a severe shortage of pathologists. In fact, there is approximately one pathologist per one million people, compared to a ratio of 1 to 25,000 in the United States and the United Kingdom. This acute shortage leads to increased costs of healthcare and reduced access to diagnostic services in the continent.

Addressing this pressing problem is DataPathology, a Morocco-based Medtech platform, DataPathology which focuses on addressing the lack of and delays in cancer diagnosis, particularly in medically underserved countries.

DataPathology, founded in 2020 by Mohammed El Khannoussi and Hicham El Attar, focuses on addressing the lack of and delays in cancer diagnosis, particularly in medically underserved countries. The startup offers quick and secure pathological diagnosis through an innovative process that involves digitizing tissue samples and securely transferring them to medical teams for diagnosis via a web platform.

To support its mission, DataPathology has secured a $1 million funding round, facilitated by the Azur Innovation Fund. The funding round follows DataPathology's earlier success in raising 2 million (Moroccan Dirhams) from the Witamax fund managed by Soax Partners.

DataPathology has already formed partnerships with international players in digital health and established the first digital pathological diagnosis centre in Morocco. The startup is also in discussions with African countries to improve cancer diagnosis.

Moving forward, DataPathology plans to expand its network of laboratories in Morocco and Africa while enhancing infrastructure and logistics to increase data integration and processing within its platform.
