Google Pay launches RuPay credit card integration in India

Google Pay or Gpay, one of the leading digital payment platforms in India, has introduced support for the integration of RuPay (Rupee Payment) Credit Card which is set to accelerate the landscape of financial transactions, making it the third major payment application to enable credit card payments through its UPI app after competitor's Paytm and PhonePe already implemented this feature.

It is worth noting that as of right now only RuPay credit card holders are permitted by the Reserve Bank of India to utilize UPI. Card issuers such as Visa and Mastercard not on the RuPay network are not yet allowed.

In case you don't know, Google Pay is a UPI-based payment app and like most payment apps only previously supported payment using a debit card, however, with this update, users can now add their RuPay credit card and make payments seamlessly to merchants across the country.

This newfound feature provided by Google Pay is expected to drive the adoption of digital payments in India, propelling the nation towards a cashless economy.  Users can now leverage their credit lines for both online and offline transactions, unlocking a world of possibilities within the ubiquitous digital payment landscape.

Nalin Bansal, Chief Relationship Management and Key Initiatives from NPCI lauds this integration for its remarkable ability to enhance convenience and offer a host of advantages to users.

This significant development follows Google's earlier successful ventures into the realm of digital payments. In 2019, Google launched UPI as a payment method for purchasing apps, games, and in-app content on Google Play. Building on this, they introduced UPI Autopay last November, allowing Indian users to conveniently subscribe to services Google Play using UPI.
