Ever downloaded a file on your [Android](https://www.techloy.com/tag/android/) and thought, *“*Why won’t this open?*”* Maybe it's a document that refuses to launch or a video your phone can't seem to recognize. Most times, the culprit isn’t the file itself—it’s the file extension. That tiny bit at the end of a file name, like `.pdf`, `.docx`, or `.zip`, tells your phone how to handle it.

The good news? You can change it yourself. Whether you're trying to convert a `.txt` into a `.html`, or make an audio file compatible with your favorite app, switching file types on Android is simple once you know how. Here’s your quick guide to doing it—no special apps or deep tech skills required.

💡

Be aware: simply changing a file's extension doesn't change its actual type (like changing .pdf to .jpg won't make it an image). This can cause compatibility issues, and your apps might not be able to open the file. If that happens, you may need a different app that supports the file's true format.

## How to Change File Extension (Type) on Android

### Step 1: Open the *Files* app on your device

### Step 2: Go to the file you want to rename. For instance I want to rename an iPhone image in *Downloads*

## Conclusion

Changing a file extension on Android might seem tricky at first, but it’s actually pretty straightforward once you know where to look. Whether you're fixing a file that won’t open or prepping it for a specific app, a quick rename can often do the trick. Just be sure you know what the new extension means—changing it doesn’t magically convert the file type. When in doubt, use a trusted file manager or converter app to help you out.
