Maybe you're running a long program on your [Mac](https://www.techloy.com/tag/macbook/), say, a software update, file transfer, or a script that takes hours to complete and just when you step away, the screen goes black, and everything pauses. Annoying, right? That’s [macOS](https://www.techloy.com/tag/macos/) doing its thing: automatically going to sleep to save energy. While it’s useful most of the time, there are moments when sleep mode can get in the way.

Whether you’re giving a presentation, downloading large files, or simply don’t want to keep tapping your trackpad to keep things alive, turning off sleep mode (even temporarily) can save you from a lot of frustration.

💡

These steps may differ if you're on macOS 13 or later.

## Conclusion

Turning off sleep mode on your Mac is straightforward if you’re just using the built-in settings. Whether you’re downloading large files, running long processes, or giving a presentation, adjusting your Energy Saver or Battery preferences ensures your Mac stays awake when you need it most. Just don’t forget to switch it back when you're done, leaving your Mac on indefinitely can drain power and shorten its lifespan.
