# Qualcomm partners with android phone makers to develop satellite messaging

Qualcomm is working with a group of Android smartphone companies to add satellite-based messaging capabilities to their devices, per a report by *Reuters*.  
  
Honor, Lenovo-owned Motorola, Nothing, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi Corp are some of the mobile phone makers that are reportedly working with the chip maker to develop devices that can connect wirelessly to satellite networks.

In early January, Qualcomm [partnered with](https://www.techloy.com/qualcomm-satellite-based-messaging-on-android/) Iridium Communications as part of its effort to add the satellite-based messaging capability to its chip, which would enable sending and receiving data in remote or rural regions in the absence of telecommunications networks.

Qualcomm's collaboration with the Android smartphone makers is set to intensify competition between these brands and Apple Inc, which last year unveiled the ability to send emergency satellite messages as one of the flagship features of its newest iPhone lineup.

It is still unclear when the new satellite messaging features from the Android smartphone brands would become available, however, earlier this year, Qualcomm mentioned that some Android phones would have the features by the second half.
