If you’re outside the UK and need a visa to work there, it isn’t. There's still a process between accepting the job and actually starting it. And understanding that process can save you from making expensive assumptions. The employer generally needs a valid sponsor licence, and the job itself must meet the requirements for the relevant visa route. The UK government also makes clear that having a sponsor doesn't guarantee that a worker will receive a visa. So before you get too excited about an offer, ask a simple question: What visa route will this role be sponsored under? For many overseas professionals, that will be the Skilled Worker route, but the answer depends on the job and your circumstances. ## Then comes the Certificate of Sponsorship If your employer is sponsoring you, it needs to assign you a [Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)](https://www.gov.uk/uk-visa-sponsorship-employers/certificates-of-sponsorship). Despite the name, this isn't a physical certificate you carry around. It's an electronic record containing information about your job and sponsorship, along with a reference number you use for your visa application. There's also a deadline, so once a CoS has been assigned, you generally need to use it to apply for your visa within three months. This is one reason it's worth asking your employer what stage the sponsorship process is at rather than assuming the paperwork will take care of itself. ## The visa itself can be expensive This is another part candidates sometimes discover too late. As of September 2026, a [Skilled Worker application](https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa/how-much-it-costs) from outside the UK costs £819 for up to three years or £1,618 for more than three years. The [Immigration Health Surcharge](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/visa-regulations-revised-table/home-office-immigration-and-nationality-fees-8-april-2026?utm%5Fsource=chatgpt.com) is generally £1,035 per year for most applicants. You may also need to show that you have £1,270 available to support yourself when you arrive, unless you qualify for an exemption or your employer certifies that it will cover your maintenance. So when an employer tells you, “We can sponsor you,” it's worth asking what that actually means financially. - Which costs will the company cover? - Which ones are yours? - And when will you receive the documents you need to apply? - The questions worth asking before you accept If you are interviewing for a sponsored UK role, these are additional questions I would want answered before signing anything: - Is the company a licensed sponsor? - Is this specific role eligible for sponsorship? - Which visa route will I be sponsored under? - When will I receive my Certificate of Sponsorship? - Which costs will the employer cover? - What documents will I need to provide? ## Want to understand the UK sponsorship process better?
