Amazon to layoff thousands of its employees this week

E-commerce giant Amazon is planning to lay off around 10,000 employees in corporate and technology roles starting this week, according to The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, in what could be the largest in the company's history.

Amazon had reported 798,000 employees at the end of 2019 but had 1.6 million full- and part-time employees as of December 2021, so the reported layoffs would represent less than 1% of Amazon’s global workforce and 3% of its corporate employees, according to Techloy analysis.

The report follows massive reductions in headcount at Twitter, Meta, and other tech firms in the past few weeks, in a bid to rein in costs amid an economic downturn and a worsening economic outlook.

The reported layoff would likely impact Amazon’s devices organization, retail division and human resources.
