Google introduces UPI Autopay as a payment option on Google Play

Google has introduced UPI Autopay as a payment option on Google Play to allow its users in India to purchase subscriptions using UPI.

Google launched UPI (Unified Payments Interface) as a payment method for buying apps, games and in-app content through Google Play in 2019 and is now stepping up with updated UPI functionality to meet user demand.

Google has now introduced UPI Autopay as a payment option on the Play Store that'll enable users in the South Asian country to make subscription-based purchases using UPI. Introduced under UPI 2.0 by NPCI, UPI Autopay helps customers make recurring payments using any UPI application that supports the feature.

The company confirmed that the UPI Autopay option adding the new payment option will not bring any other changes to its billing system. The option is available alongside the existing credit and debit card, net banking, direct carrier billing and gift card options.

Google Play's decision to introduce the payment option comes shortly after the CCI fined the tech giant twice for anti-competitive practices, preventing developers from using third-party payments system for paid apps and in-app purchases in the Play Store.

The Android maker is now testing alternative payment systems for the Google Play Store in countries including South Korea, Australia, Japan and most recently in the U.S. to resist regulatory pressure.
