Blizzard Entertainment announced Tuesday that it’s developing Overwatch Rush, an entirely new mobile game set in the Overwatch universe. Blizzard is being very clear about one thing: this is not a port of Overwatch.

Instead, Overwatch Rush is being built from the ground up as a “mobile-first experience.”

Blizzard says Overwatch Rush is being developed by a separate internal team, distinct from Team 4, the group responsible for the mainline Overwatch 2.

“While there remains a lot of work to do, we’re eager to see how players enjoy what we’ve built so far and to hear from them on what we should focus on in the coming phases of development. Our mission is to continue to expand the Overwatch universe by bringing fresh new adventures to players across all platforms. We'll continue to keep you updated on how things are progressing,” Blizzard said in a blog post.

What Is Overwatch Rush?

Overwatch Rush is a top-down hero shooter featuring familiar Overwatch heroes battling on maps inspired by the franchise’s classic locations.

Early gameplay footage shows:

  • Two teams of four competing
  • A Control-style objective mode
  • Reworked hero abilities adapted for mobile
  • A more cartoonish art style for readability

The visual shift makes sense. From a top-down perspective on a smaller screen, clearer silhouettes and brighter effects help players quickly track the action.

Blizzard describes Overwatch Rush as fast-paced and designed specifically for mobile sessions.

Key details include:

  • Touchscreen controls (no controller support)
  • Bite-sized matches
  • Hero-focused combat
  • Customization options for both solo and team players
  • Free-to-play monetization

The company says the game is still in early development and will begin regional testing soon as it refines gameplay balance, server performance, and monetization systems.

Overwatch Rush will launch on Android and iOS.

This isn’t Blizzard’s first mobile effort. The studio previously released Diablo Immortal, and Warcraft Rumble.

Overwatch Rush marks another step in expanding its major franchises into the mobile market, one of the largest and fastest-growing segments in gaming.
