Disney hints at AI tools and interactive features coming to Disney+
AI creation tools and interactive features could give Disney Plus subscribers' new ways to engage with the platform.
Disney might be getting ready to turn Disney Plus into more than just a streaming app, and AI is at the center of that shift. During Disney’s latest earnings call, CEO Bob Iger made it clear he’s thinking beyond traditional streaming. According to him, AI could eventually let viewers both watch and create short-form videos inside Disney+.
You read that right. Disney+ might one day include tools for making your own AI-generated clips. Iger didn’t explain what that would actually look like, and “AI Disney short films” could easily swing between magical and a little chaotic, but the direction is obvious. Streaming platforms aren’t just fighting over content libraries anymore. They’re turning into creative environments.
The timing lines up with where Disney is right now. The company added 1.5 million new subscribers in the US and Canada last quarter, bringing its North American total to 59.3 million, even after raising prices. If Disney wants to keep people engaged in a more competitive market, giving subscribers something new, or something they can make, might be part of the strategy.
Iger also hinted that Disney Plus could expand in ways that stretch beyond its TV-and-movie roots. Thanks to Disney’s partnership with Epic Games, the app could eventually include game-like features, similar to Netflix’s ongoing push into gaming. There’s also a potential commerce angle. Imagine watching a show and being able to tap straight into booking a Disneyland trip or a Disney Cruise. That turns Disney Plus into more than a viewing platform. It becomes a hub that connects audiences with the broader Disney ecosystem.
It’s unclear how much of this is coming soon and how much is simply Iger outlining what’s possible. But it signals a future where streaming services evolve into interactive, personalized spaces powered by AI rather than static libraries of content.
The takeaway
Disney is doing more than planning more shows and franchises. It wants Disney Plus to grow into an AI-enabled interactive platform that blends content creation, game-like experiences, and direct access to Disney parks and services. The goal is simple. Keep subscribers inside the Disney universe for longer, and give them more reasons to stay.
