A new mod for Fallout: New Vegas is bringing a dose of absurdist humour to the Mojave Wasteland. Modder Zhang Yue Zhi has ported the Fallout: New Vegas Greatest Hits PS3 case into the PC version of the game, turning it into a fully functional unarmed weapon.

And it’s not just for show. The mod also gives the case a Wild Wasteland perk instant-kill bonus, meaning a single swing can instantly eliminate enemies—perfectly in line with Fallout’s signature over-the-top chaos.

Where the Mod Started

The story of this mod actually dates back to October, when Nexus user Pope74220 created a detailed replica of the New Vegas Greatest Hits Ultimate Edition PS3 box for Fallout 3.

The model was impressively faithful, down to the back-of-box text and info panels, and functioned as a usable weapon. Players could literally beat enemies with the game’s red-banded Blu-ray case.

Bringing the Joke Full Circle

In January, Zhang Yue Zhi brought the idea full circle by porting the PS3 box weapon into Fallout: New Vegas on PC.

This version doesn’t just add a novelty item—it enhances it. By tying the weapon to the Wild Wasteland perk, the mod allows the disc case to occasionally trigger instant kills. It’s a small addition that fits perfectly with the perk’s reputation for bizarre, unpredictable moments.

Why the PS3 Version Matters

The choice of weapon isn’t random. The PS3 edition of New Vegas has a long-standing reputation among fans.

Running at 720p and often struggling to maintain 30fps, it was known for crashes and performance issues—largely due to the complexity of the PlayStation 3’s Cell Processor. Despite this, it served as an entry point for many players, thanks to Obsidian Entertainment’s strong storytelling and world-building.

The Greatest Hits re-release, with its iconic red Blu-ray band, carries a certain underdog charm. That context is what makes the mod especially funny—the joke works because players already understand the legacy of the PS3 version.

What the Mod Includes

The mod is available in two versions:

  • Fallout 3 version (Pope74220): Adds the PS3 Greatest Hits box as a fully detailed unarmed weapon
  • Fallout: New Vegas version (Zhang Yue Zhi): Ports the same weapon to PC, with an added Wild Wasteland insta-kill effect

Both mods are free on Nexus and only require the base game to use.

A Perfect Example of Fallout Modding Creativity

This mod is a great example of the creativity—and humour—of the Fallout modding community. It takes a piece of gaming history and turns it into something both ridiculous and strangely fitting.

With remaster rumours still circulating, especially following recent teases involving Iron Galaxy, now might be the perfect time to revisit Fallout: New Vegas—preferably on PC, and preferably armed with a PS3 disc case.
