Google started rolling out Notebooks in Gemini on April 8, introducing a dedicated workspace that connects the Gemini app with NotebookLM to organize AI conversations, files, and long-term projects in one synchronized space. The company described notebooks as "personal knowledge bases shared across Google products, starting in Gemini" in its official announcement.
The feature functions similarly to ChatGPT's Projects which launched in 2024. Google added NotebookLM as a source in the Gemini app in December 2025. Notebooks expands that integration by creating persistent project containers where users can group related conversations, files, and instructions.
How to Use Notebooks in Gemini
Notebooks give users a structured way to organize everything related to a specific project. Click “New notebook” in the Gemini app’s side panel to start. From there, you can move past chats into notebooks, upload files like PDFs and documents, and set custom instructions that tell Gemini exactly how you want it to respond..
Any source added to a notebook in Gemini appears automatically in NotebookLM and vice . This means you can start a project in Gemini, then switch to NotebookLM to access features like Video Overviews and Infographics, without manually transferring files or re-uploading documents.
Subscription Limits for Sources and Notebooks
The number of notebooks and sources you can add depends on your Google AI subscription plan:
- Free users: 100 notebooks with up to 50 sources each
- Google AI Plus: 200 notebooks with up to 100 sources per notebook
- Google AI Pro: 500 notebooks with up to 300 sources each
- Google AI Ultra: 500 notebooks with up to 600 sources per notebook
When Notebooks Will Be Available
Google began rolling out notebooks this week to Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus subscribers on the web. The company plans to expand access to mobile devices, more European countries, and free users in the coming weeks.
Notebooks are not available for users under 18 or accounts on Workspace and Education plans.
Moving Existing Chats Into Notebooks
Every Gemini chat now has an "Add to notebook" option in the overflow menu. Users can select which notebook to add the conversation to, and Gemini will maintain that context in future chats within the same notebook.
Sources appear above the prompt box. Users can delete sources or add more from files, Google Drive, websites, or copied text.
Google said it is working on additional notebook features. "This is a first step, and we're working to bring even more helpful features to notebooks in Gemini in the future," the company said in the announcement.
