Grok is finally coming to Tesla
Unfortunately, you can only have a chat.
Just as Grok is getting the heat for antisemitic and non-factual information on X (formerly Twitter), a fixed version of the AI bot has now been shipped to Tesla.
This rollout began on June 12 for eligible cars delivered from that period in the United States following the debut of Grok 4. But older vehicles are not left behind, as they can gain access through an update, provided their vehicle meets a few hardware and software requirements.
For now, Grok only works on Tesla models using the AMD processor and running software version 2025.26 and higher. The Tesla models compatible with Grok include the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. You also need a Premium Connectivity subscription or an active Wi-Fi connection to use Grok on your Tesla.
You may be wondering about the utility of Grok on your car. Well, it's a smart chatbot, so you can engage in conversations to keep you company, ask questions about routes, traffic, and so much more. You can also give it a personality and voice that matches your taste, too.
While you might want more like "Grok, drive me to Pizza Hut," "Grok turn on the light," that's not possible because Grok itself cannot issue commands to the vehicle for now. But we're expecting that to change soon.
If you want to engage with Grok, you can do so using the App Launcher or by pressing and holding the voice command button on the steering wheel. And since the feature is being released in Beta, it does not require a Grok account or xAI subscription to activate, although this may change over time.
If you're big on privacy, Tesla has made it clear that the conversations with Grok are securely processed by xAI and not linked to your Tesla account or vehicle. These conversations should remain anonymous unless you sign into Grok separately to sync your history across devices.
While X is moving at an interesting speed with Grok on Tesla, Google still poses as a threat as Gemini is reported to be available on various car brands, like Volvo. This means that Gemini may have a wider market reach than Grok, which is currently only available on Tesla vehicles.
