A previously unannounced Halo multiplayer project known internally as Project Ekur has reportedly been canceled, marking another shift in Microsoft's long-term plans for its flagship shooter.

The report comes from Windows Central, which says it independently verified the cancellation after it was first reported by Halo content creator Rebs Gaming. "Halo Studios was working on a multiplayer title known as Project Ekur, which has been canceled. I've verified that as 100% true," Windows Central's Jez Corden wrote.

Neither Halo Studios nor Xbox has publicly commented on the report.

What was Project Ekur?

Although Microsoft never officially announced Project Ekur, reports suggest it wasn't intended to be Halo's next blockbuster release.

Instead, it appears to have been an experimental multiplayer prototype created after the cancellation of Project Tatanka, the Halo battle royale experience that Certain Affinity had spent several years developing.
