Researchers from a technological institution based in Saudi Arabia have made a breakthrough advancement in quantum technology. They have been able to create the world’s fastest random number generator, and according to international benchmarks, it could be well over 100 times faster than the models we use today.

Random Number Generators Play A Huge Role in Our Lives

Random number generators, even though they are often overlooked, play a big role in our lives. Bank PIN codes and new cards, when issued, often use random number generators to ensure that PINs are both unique and unpredictable. Two-factor authentication is another example of how random number generators can be used. They provide an extra layer of security for the user, as a random string of numbers is texted to the user’s device.

They are even used in gaming. Random number generators are sometimes used to determine the loot from a random loot box. In a broader sense, they are also used to determine the result of online slot games. Online slots UK, including Buffalo King Megaways and 12 Masks of Fire Drums, use random number generators to make sure that the outcome of spinning slot reels is truly random. With games that have a jackpot, this can result in there being a one-in-about-34-million chance of winning, showing the importance of randomness in spin outcomes.

Interestingly, modern vehicles are also becoming increasingly reliant on encrypted communication, especially with keyless entry and engine immobilizers. They all require robust random numbers to stop hacks. With these examples in mind, it is abundantly clear that there is a growing market for random number generators, with the market valued at 4.73 billion USD in 2024.

The New Discovery is a Huge Leap in Data Security

Innovations like this are a huge leap in data security and data management. Professor Boon Ooi, who helped to lead the study, has come out to say that most random number generators are pseudo-random, but quantum random numbers are very different and are much more secure. By using micro-LEDs, each of which is only a few micrometers in size, it becomes possible to create a new quantum generator that is not only secure but also portable. The QRNG created can achieve 1.1 petabits.

One other advancement was made in 2025 in quantum random number generators. Quantum Dice devices and entangled photons were used to create results that reached 19 gigabits per second. This helped to create truly random bits that could be used for a number of secure applications, including photonic chips for high-performance devices.

So, as you can see, numerous advancements have been made in 2025 in random number generators, and it is incredibly interesting to see how far things have come, even in the last few months. At this rate, it would not be surprising to see even more breakthroughs as 2025 comes to a close. Advancements like this are critical to sectors like cybersecurity, but also have a large role to play in cryptocurrency and data encryption as well.
