For years, electric cars have been pitched as the future of performance. Instant torque, breathtaking acceleration, and near-silent power have become the selling points. But Lamborghini thinks something important is still missing.

The Italian supercar maker has once again changed course on its first electric vehicle. The Lanzador, originally revealed in 2023 as an all-electric grand tourer, is now expected to launch as a plug-in hybrid instead. More significantly, Lamborghini says its first fully electric production car won’t arrive until sometime after 2030.

Why Lamborghini changed its mind

This isn’t the first delay. The Lanzador has gradually shifted from an EV planned for 2028 to 2029, before reports earlier this year suggested the electric version had been abandoned altogether. Now Lamborghini has confirmed that direction.

Speaking to What Car?, Stefano Cossalter, Lamborghini’s product director for the Urus and Lanzador, said customer demand simply wasn’t there.

“There was little to no acceptance by our customers. There was no interest; they were not willing to buy an electric car.”

He added: “We believe that, at the moment, the technology is not mature enough.”
