Samsung Wallet will soon let you send money to other phones and cards

Just by simply tapping phones together.

Paying someone back shouldn’t be complicated. You’re at dinner, trying to split the bill, and suddenly it turns into a juggling act of apps, account numbers, and slow transfers. Well, Samsung's new Tap to Transfer feature wants to simplify that, at least for Galaxy users.

Rolling out later this month in the U.S., the feature lets you send money through Samsung Wallet by simply tapping phones together. It uses NFC, the same tech behind contactless payments at checkout, and works between Samsung devices with Wallet installed. But it doesn’t stop there.

Even if the person you’re paying doesn’t have a Samsung device, you can still send money by tapping your phone against their debit card, as long as it supports tap-to-pay. The transfer goes through without needing an app or bank login, thanks to Samsung’s partnerships with Visa and Mastercard.

And if you’re not in the same room, there’s a workaround for that too. You can search for the recipient’s Samsung account using their phone number and send money remotely, without swapping banking details.

Apple’s Tap-to-Pay is rolling out to more European countries
Even third party apps can harness Apple’s NFC chip now

While Apple has similar features on the iPhone, like Tap to Cash and Tap to Pay, they only work within Apple’s ecosystem. Samsung’s version appears a bit more open, with support for third-party digital wallets (like Apple Wallet) and physical debit cards. This openness could give Samsung an edge in the market.

That said, Tap to Transfer only works on Samsung Galaxy phones. So, if you're using a different Android or Samsung device, you’re may still be stuck with the old ways for now. At the same time, if this rollout goes well, there’s reason to hope it expands to other regions.

Maybe even Africa. 🫣
