Sony has begun rolling out an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as part of a new PS5 system software update, bringing improved image clarity, motion stability and performance to supported games on the PS5 Pro.
The update, which started rolling out on March 16, expands support for the AI-driven upscaling technology across a growing list of titles, including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Crimson Desert.
What the upgraded PSSR does
PSSR is Sony’s AI-based upscaling system, designed to enhance image quality by analysing each frame at a pixel level.
According to Sony, the upgraded version improves how images are reconstructed, reducing flickering and stabilising motion while preserving fine details across environments and character models.
“Image reconstruction is more precise, motion stability is improved, and developers have greater flexibility to balance performance and fidelity on PS5 Pro,” said Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The feature can also be manually enabled for existing supported games via an optional PS5 Pro system setting.
Games Already Benefiting
A wide range of developers are already integrating the upgraded PSSR into their titles, including:
- Silent Hill f and Silent Hill 2 (Konami)
- Monster Hunter Wilds and Dragon’s Dogma 2 (Capcom)
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Square Enix)
- Alan Wake 2 and Control (Remedy Entertainment)
- Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II (Ninja Theory)
- Nioh 3 and Rise of the Ronin (Koei Tecmo)
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard (BioWare)
Upcoming and patched titles include:
- Crimson Desert (launch support)
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows
- Cyberpunk 2077
What Developers Are Saying
Studios are already seeing tangible improvements. The Silent Hill f team highlighted “greater clarity in fine details” and deeper immersion, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi noted more natural detail restoration and reduced flickering, and Tatu Aalto from Remedy emphasized better motion clarity and image stability, especially in fast-moving scenes.
Across the board, the feedback is consistent: cleaner visuals without performance trade-offs.
You Don’t Have to Wait for Patches
One of the most interesting parts of this rollout is flexibility.
Even if a game hasn’t been officially updated, PS5 Pro users can manually enable the upgraded PSSR via system settings for supported titles. Results may vary, but many games could still see noticeable improvements.
This upgraded PSSR is part of Sony’s Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, combining AI and graphics innovation to push console performance forward.
