Most days, the way money moves around the world stays pretty much the same. But every now and then, a big player teams up with a local expert and shakes things up, and that’s what Stripe is doing in Brazil.

Here, the payment system, Pix, is practically a way of life, because millions of people still can’t use a credit card. It’s a strange mix of convenience and limitation, where paying is effortless for some and frustrating for others.

Pix, launched by Brazil’s central bank in 2020, is now used by 93% of Brazilian adults, according to EBANX. It works at any hour, moves money in seconds, and handles everything from splitting your dinner bills to paying government fees. For locals, it’s effortless. But for global businesses, though, integrating Pix hasn’t always been straightforward.

Stripe and EBANX want to change that. EBANX has spent more than a decade helping international e-commerce adapt to Brazil’s payment quirks. By pairing that know-how with Stripe’s global reach, they’re giving merchants a streamlined way to offer Pix at checkout, whether they sell directly through Stripe or through connected e-commerce platforms.

This could mark the beginning of institutional adoption in crypto payment.

The logic behind this collaboration is that when people can pay the way they prefer, they’re more likely to buy. Stripe’s research shows that adding just one extra familiar payment method can lift revenue by 12% and conversions by 7%. EBANX’s data is even starker; merchants offering Pix in cross-border sales saw revenue climb 16% and customers grow by 25% in half a year. In a market where millions live without a credit card, Pix is more than just a bonus feature. It’s a lifeline.

The competition, however, is already crowded. Local heavyweights like PagSeguro, Mercado Pago, and Cielo, and global players like Adyen and PayPal, have been offering Pix for years. Stripe may be arriving late, but with EBANX as a guide, it’s stepping in with local credibility and an easier path for merchants to get on board.

If you look at the bigger picture, a pattern emerges of global commerce bending to local habits instead of trying to overwrite them. Pix is expected to surpass credit cards for online purchases in Brazil by year’s end. If Stripe’s bet pays off, the real beneficiaries won’t just be the companies involved; it’ll be the millions of Brazilian consumers and small businesses who suddenly find the global marketplace within reach.
