If you’re anything like me, you probably care about staying safe online, especially when using public Wi-Fi, or maybe you want access to content from other countries. Either way, setting up a VPN on your MacBook is easier than most people think.
Here’s the simple breakdown.
Step 1: Pick a VPN Service
First, you need a VPN provider. There are plenty out there, but I usually recommend straightforward, reliable options like ProtonVPN, NordVPN, or Surfshark. For this video, we'll be using Proton VPN.
Head to the official website of whichever one you choose, sign up for an account, and download the Mac app. Once it’s downloaded, install it like you would any other app, drag it into Applications and open it.
Step 2: Log In and Choose Your Location
After installing, open the VPN app and log in with the account you created. You’ll usually see a big “Connect” button right away. But before tapping it, choose your server location. This part matters.
If you want websites to think you’re browsing from the United States, select a US server. Want a UK or European IP address? Choose a server in that region. The server you pick becomes your new digital location.
It’s that simple.
Step 3: Connect
Now hit “Connect.” The first time you do this, your MacBook may ask for permission to add VPN configurations. Just approve it, that’s normal. You might need to enter your Mac password to confirm.
Once connected, you’ll see a small VPN icon in your menu bar at the top of your screen. That’s your sign that everything is working. At this point, your internet traffic is encrypted, which means it’s much harder for anyone on the same network, especially public Wi-Fi, to snoop on what you’re doing.
Step 4: Disconnect When You’re Done
When you no longer need it, open the app and click “Disconnect.” That’s it.
Conclusion
Quick tip: I personally keep my VPN on whenever I’m using public Wi-Fi at cafes, airports, or hotels. It just adds an extra layer of protection.
And that’s the whole process. No complicated settings. No tech skills needed. Just download, log in, choose your location, and connect.
