The global games industry is gathering in San Francisco this week, March 9-13, for the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026, one of the largest annual gatherings for game creators, publishers, and technology companies.
Unlike consumer-focused events such as the now-defunct Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), GDC focuses on the craft and business of making games. The conference typically features hundreds of panels, technical talks, and workshops where developers share insights about tools, design processes, and emerging industry trends.
This year’s event is expected to focus heavily on artificial intelligence, development tools, and behind-the-scenes insights from some of the industry’s largest studios.
Tech Companies Highlight New Development Tools
Technology providers are playing a major role at this year’s conference, with several sessions focused on how new tools are changing the way games are built.
One panel titled “How AI Is Reshaping Game Creation” will bring together speakers from companies including Google Cloud, Electronic Arts, Unity Technologies, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The discussion will examine how AI tools are being integrated into development workflows, from asset generation to testing and player analytics.
Meanwhile, Epic Games will host multiple technical sessions focused on improving performance in games built with Unreal Engine 5, including a talk on maintaining stable 60-frames-per-second gameplay in modern titles.
Adobe is also scheduled to present updates on its Substance 3D software, a suite of tools widely used by game artists to create textures, materials, and environmental assets.
Studios Offer Behind-the-Scenes Development Insights
Some of the most closely watched sessions at GDC traditionally come from major studios explaining how their games are designed and built.
Developers from EA DICE are expected to discuss the design philosophy behind the upcoming Battlefield 6 in a panel titled “Battlefield 6: Game Feel Is the Message.” The talk will examine how the studio approaches player responsiveness and tactile feedback in large-scale shooters.
Meanwhile, Mojang Studios will present a technical session on updating the rendering systems behind Minecraft, focusing on how the long-running sandbox game continues to evolve visually while maintaining performance across multiple platforms.
Elsewhere, Gameloft will host a panel on narrative design within Disney Dreamlight Valley, offering insight into how the studio structures story-driven gameplay within a live-service game.
AI Takes Center Stage
Artificial intelligence has become one of the most widely discussed topics in game development, and it is expected to feature prominently across several sessions at GDC 2026.
Panels scheduled throughout the conference include speakers from companies such as Ubisoft, Blizzard Entertainment, and researchers connected to Google DeepMind.
These discussions are likely to address both the opportunities and concerns surrounding AI tools in gaming, from procedural content generation and development automation to moderation systems and anti-cheat technologies.
Business and Publishing Strategies
Beyond development technology, GDC also serves as a forum for discussions about the economics of game development.
One session titled “Game Funding: Lessons From Outersloth” will feature members of Innersloth, the studio behind Among Us, discussing how its publishing label has supported independent developers.
Another talk from Tencent will examine the company’s global publishing strategy for the revived military shooter Delta Force, focusing on multi-platform distribution and international market expansion.
