Apple is reportedly facing a reality check with its high-end Vision Pro headset as the company claims it has slashed its shipment forecast for 2024 due to weaker-than-expected demand.

Initial projections pointed towards sales figures between 700,000 and 800,000 units for 2024. However, Apple has now revised its estimates downward, anticipating sales to fall within the range of 400,000 to 450,000 units. This significant reduction reflects a substantial drop in demand for the $3,500 device.

The mixed reality headset will be available first in the United States, with the UK and Canada expected to follow next.

While the Vision Pro impressed early adopters with its technical capabilities, as highlighted in reviews, it seems that initial excitement waned after the return window closed. This suggests the high price tag and potentially niche features may not resonate with a broader audience.

Apple is reportedly re-evaluating its roadmap in light of the Vision Pro's performance. This could potentially delay, or even cancel, plans for a more affordable mixed reality headset initially expected by 2025.

Apple's stumble with the Vision Pro could have ripple effects across the industry. As a trendsetter in technology, the headset's lacklustre performance might dampen enthusiasm for VR and AR in general.
