The current Apple Watch design has been a staple for the last 10 years. It has come in different sizes and gained better screens and faster chips over the years, but its basic rounded-square silhouette has remained largely unchanged.

That might finally be changing. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple’s industrial design team is exploring a “broader rethink” of the smartwatch, potentially as significant as the shift from a traditional iPhone to a foldable.

Apple is considering everything from screenless fitness trackers and round displays to new premium and budget tiers. Nothing is confirmed yet, but the fact that Apple is exploring these options suggests that the company sees a need to rethink the Watch lineup.

Why is Apple considering a redesign right now?

Two major factors appear to be pushing Apple towards a rethink of the Watch.

Screenless fitness trackers from Whoop, Oura, and Fitbit have gained traction among users who prefer health tracking without a display. Apple currently has no direct answer in that segment, and a screenless tracker could give it one.
