Apple's Upcoming iPad Pro May Feature Dual Front Cameras

Finally, a fix for the iPad’s awkward camera angles.

Holding your iPad straight up and still not looking at the camera? It’s been a weird part of video calls on iPads for years. But Apple may finally have a fix, putting two front cameras on the next iPad Pro.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to add a second front-facing camera to the portrait edge of the upcoming iPad Pro later this year. That means there would be one camera on the top when you hold it upright and another on the side when you hold it like a laptop. The iPad could then switch between them depending on how you're holding it, making video calls and selfies a lot less awkward.

Until now, iPads have required users to choose a single camera position. The camera was stuck in one spot, first on the portrait edge, then moved to the landscape edge with the iPad Pro M4 in 2024. That shift helped people who use their iPad on a stand or with a keyboard, but it wasn’t great for others. Unlocking with Face ID or looking natural on FaceTime became a bit of a guessing game.

If Apple follows through, this change would put the iPad Pro more in line with Samsung’s Tab S9 series. The Tab S9 Ultra has two front cameras (wide and ultrawide), and supports auto-framing to keep you centred during calls. That feature has already made Samsung’s tablets more flexible for work and content creation. However, it doesn't solve the fundamental issue of the camera being in a suboptimal position when the tablet is held in the opposite orientation. This is also true for many other mass-market tablets.

Choosing between the iPad Pro M4 and Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra depends on your priorities.

Apart from camera updates, the new iPad Pro is expected to come with the M5 chip, which could bring better battery life and smoother performance. Apple’s next chip upgrade may also hit the Vision Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac later this year.

If Apple pulls this off well, with smooth transitions and excellent camera quality from both sensors, it would indeed be a clever and practical solution that the competition hasn't fully implemented in the same way. And for anyone tired of awkward angles or failed Face ID attempts, this would be a welcome change.
