This is a busy weekend at the North American box office. Avengers: Endgame: Encore is back in cinemas, but it has plenty of company. Three new films are opening at the same time, while Resident Evil is still playing after leading the box office last weekend.
Endgame: Encore began previews on Thursday, September 24, before its official release on Friday. It made about $3 million from previews, according to Deadline. A24’s Primetime, starring Robert Pattinson, made roughly the same amount, giving the weekend an early sign of competition.
Then there is Paramount’s Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt, and Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island. So, if you are heading to the cinema this weekend, there is no shortage of options. The interesting part is seeing whether audiences will choose something new or return to a film they already know.

Why Is Endgame Back in Cinemas?
Marvel could have simply put Avengers: Endgame back in cinemas and called it a day. Instead, Endgame: Encore comes with a few new pieces that give fans a reason to watch it again.
The 2019 blockbuster is returning with extra footage that connects it to Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for December 18, 2026. Disney has confirmed the September return, while current listings put the new version at around 185 minutes, making it several minutes longer than the original.
Joe Russo, who directed Endgame with Anthony Russo and is also directing Doomsday, has described the new version as “required viewing” for audiences following the upcoming film. He told Fandango that the re-release will “connect the story of the two movies”.
