Canada has extended one of its most accessible pathways to permanent residency for international students, giving eligible French-speaking graduates another year to apply without needing a job offer.

The Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot (FMCSP), which was due to close in August 2026, will now remain open until August 2027. The extension means qualifying students can move from a study permit directly to permanent residence after graduation, skipping the work permit and job-offer stage that most international graduates typically follow.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the extension this week during a press conference in Winnipeg, alongside a joint $1.3 million investment with Manitoba to strengthen Francophone immigration outside Quebec.

"It is a concrete step toward ensuring the vitality and sustainability of Franco-Manitoban communities and a new step forward in achieving the Government of Canada’s ambitious goal for Francophone immigration," Diab said.
