Hollow Knight: Silksong is getting a free Sea of Sorrow expansion in 2026
Players will get new content for Silksong at no extra cost and a free next-gen upgrade for the original Hollow Knight on Switch 2.
Fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong have something new to look forward to. Developer Team Cherry has announced a free expansion called Sea of Sorrow, slated for release in 2026. Details are limited for now, but the studio describes the expansion as nautically themed. A short teaser shows Hornet standing alone on a rocky outcrop as waves crash around her, hinting at new environments shaped by water and isolation.
The announcement arrived alongside another update aimed at smoothing the series’ future. Team Cherry says it's also preparing a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the original Hollow Knight. This version will bring the 2017 classic in line with Silksong’s Switch 2 release, offering higher resolution, improved frame rates, and overall visual refinements. Players who already own Hollow Knight on the original Switch will receive the upgrade at no additional cost.
Both the Sea of Sorrow expansion and the Switch 2 update are targeting a broad 2026 release window. Together, they reflect how far Silksong has come. What began years ago as a planned DLC for Hollow Knight eventually grew into a full standalone game, released in 2025 to widespread acclaim. It went on to earn five nominations at The Game Awards 2025, including Game of the Year, and won Best Action and Adventure Game.
Seen in that context, Sea of Sorrow feels less like a small add-on and more like a continuation of Team Cherry’s long-term approach to the series. Rather than moving on immediately, the studio is extending the world of Hallownest while also ensuring the original game holds up technically alongside its sequel.
The takeaway
The free Sea of Sorrow expansion shows that Team Cherry plans to support Hollow Knight: Silksong well beyond launch, giving players a reason to return to Hornet’s journey. At the same time, the Switch 2 upgrade for the original Hollow Knight helps bring the entire series into the next console generation. For fans, it signals continuity more than novelty, an effort to keep the franchise cohesive, playable, and relevant as it moves through 2026.
