For many people around the world, WhatsApp is a quick and easy way to stay connected. Now, the messaging platform wants to make its calls more accessible with a feature that lets people join without having a WhatsApp account.

Announced on Wednesday, 14 October, the feature, Guest calling, allows people without an account to join one-on-one or group voice and video calls through an invitation link.

Calls are free, end-to-end encrypted, and have no time limits, with group calls supporting up to 32 participants. Guests must wait for the hostโ€™s approval before joining and can be removed at any time. They also cannot see other participantsโ€™ phone numbers, send messages, or add people to the call, but they can share their screen, react with emojis, and raise their hand.

The feature could be useful for people who rely on WhatsApp but occasionally need to call someone who uses a different platform.
