Rajinikanth is back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, and audiences are already turning out in large numbers for Jailer 2. Released in cinemas worldwide on 15 October 2026, the Tamil action thriller is targeting a worldwide opening of Rs 150 crore ($17.3 million).
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the sequel follows the 2023 blockbuster, which earned around Rs 604 crore ($69.6 million) worldwide. Early reviews have praised Rajinikanth’s screen presence, the comedy and several action sequences, although some viewers have criticised the film’s weaker second half.
This puts the sequel in an interesting position, as its star power is driving strong interest, but it must deliver more than familiar crowd-pleasing moments to match the original’s success.

Jailer 2 Targets A Rs 150 Crore Opening
The film entered its opening day with strong advance sales. According to Sacnilk's final advance-booking report, Jailer 2 recorded Rs 41.48 crore in Indian opening-day bookings, including blocked seats. The figure excluding blocked seats was Rs 37.60 crore.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala, speaking to NDTV, estimated that worldwide advance bookings had reached around Rs 40 crore before release. He projected a Rs 150 crore global opening, with India contributing approximately Rs 90 crore. These remain forecasts rather than confirmed box-office earnings, and the final figures will depend on cinema attendance and audience word of mouth.
Early Day 1 figures suggest that Jailer 2 has made a strong start at the box office. Sacnilk's live tracker puts the film's India net collection at Rs 24.09 crore so far, with the total still changing as more cinemas report their earnings. The figure is provisional, and the final opening-day collection is yet to be confirmed.
Early Reviews Praise Rajinikanth But The Sequel Has Weak Spots
Initial reactions have highlighted the elements that made the first film popular, including Rajinikanth’s commanding screen presence, Nelson’s comedy and Anirudh Ravichander’s background score.
In its early review roundup, ABP Live quoted the reviewer Venky Reviews, describing the film as a familiar commercial entertainer with a solid first half but an underwhelming second half.
The criticism is not limited to online reactions. In its review of the film, The Indian Express praised Rajinikanth’s screen presence and the production’s action sequences, but pointed to underdeveloped characters and predictable plotting. The mixed response suggests that the film has entertaining moments, but its storytelling may not be as consistent as fans hoped.
Can It Match The Original Jailer Movie?
The first Jailer movie became one of Rajinikanth’s biggest recent hits, earning approximately Rs 604 crore worldwide. Its success came from combining his screen presence with a crime story, dark humour, memorable supporting characters, and appearances by stars including Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar.
