The mystery at the centre of HBO’s Lanterns has changed dramatically in just one episode. After spending the first half of Season 1 asking who the Manhunter was, Episode 5, “Lights Out”, turns that question into a much bigger problem for John Stewart and Hal Jordan.
The episode aired on September 13, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max, with the DC Studios series set primarily around Rushville, Nebraska. HBO confirmed an eight-episode first season, putting the series past its halfway point.
What Happens to Zoe in Lanterns Episode 5?
Episode 5 confirms that discovering Zoe Macon was the Manhunter was only the beginning. Poorna Jagannathan’s character is killed by John Stewart after he decides that she remains too dangerous to leave alive. The decision is especially difficult because Zoe and John had developed a genuine emotional connection.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Jagannathan’s portrayal was deliberately built around Zoe’s humanity, despite her identity as a Manhunter. The actress said the character had been written as someone whose programming could override her emotions, making her more complicated than a straightforward villain. Her death therefore gives the series a darker moral question. John has spent the season learning to challenge Hal’s judgement, yet he now makes a decision that could haunt him just as much.
