At this year’s Game Developers Conference, Microsoft unveiled a major look at the future of Xbox, presented by Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation Xbox, during the Xbox Developer Summit keynote on March 11, 2026.

Project Helix: The Next Generation of Xbox

Ronald confirmed that Project Helix is deep in development. Built in partnership with AMD, the console aims to deliver a new standard for graphical performance and immersive gameplay.

“Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming,” Ronald said.

Key features highlighted include a custom AMD SoC co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FSR

Significant leaps in ray tracing performance, integrated intelligence in graphics and compute pipelines, enhanced efficiency, scale, and visual ambition for developers.

Ronald added, “It delivers an order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability, integrates intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline, and drives meaningful gains in efficiency, scale, and visual ambition. The result is more realistic, immersive, and dynamic worlds for players.”

Microsoft plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.

Unifying Console and PC Gaming

A central theme of Ronald’s keynote was breaking down barriers between console and PC gaming.

“As games increasingly span devices, we’re breaking down the barriers between console and PC games for more seamless cross-device play, and we’re making the Xbox experience consistent across screens,” he said.

The Xbox Play Anywhere catalogue now spans over 1,500 games, letting players buy a game once and play it seamlessly across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs while keeping their progress intact. Over 500 development teams have already shipped Play Anywhere titles.

Xbox Mode on Windows

Microsoft is also rolling out Xbox Mode on Windows 11 starting in April in select markets. This feature delivers a controller-friendly, full-screen gaming experience, inspired by experiments with handhelds like the ROG Xbox Ally, while maintaining the openness of Windows for productivity and flexibility.

“Xbox Mode lets players seamlessly switch between productivity and play, with a familiar full screen and controller-optimized Xbox experience while embracing the openness of Windows”, Ronald explained.

Celebrating 25 Years of Xbox

2026 marks Xbox’s 25th anniversary, and Ronald highlighted Microsoft’s commitment to backward compatibility, ensuring titles from four generations of Xbox consoles remain playable. The company also teased special initiatives to bring back some of its most iconic games.

“We’re committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come,” he said.

Looking Ahead

Ronald emphasized that the next era of Xbox will focus on cross-device gaming, developer-friendly tools, and next-gen hardware innovation. Alongside major franchises like Halo and Gears of War, players can expect a steady stream of releases from both global partners and independent developers.

“This is just the start of the next generation and the next 25 years of Xbox, and we can’t wait to share more later this year. As we listen, learn, and build in partnership with the industry and the community, we’d like to thank you for being part of the journey and making gaming so unique and enduring”, he said.

With Project Helix in development and Xbox Mode arriving on Windows soon, Microsoft is laying the foundation for the next 25 years of gaming.
