First, I want to begin this week's edition with an apology for the Techloy Weekly newsletter that went out earlier in the week. Yes, it was an error, and yes, it was a new teammate, and yes, we have told them these things happen to the best of us and given them new information that we believe will prevent it from repeating itself in the future.
Now that that is out of the way, I want to talk about Neo.
Days after Apple announced the MacBook Neo, I was close to preordering mine. Earning primarily in naira, it would have cost me a fortune even with its $600 price point. It would be the first time I was pre-ordering a Mac. I typically would wait a year or two before upgrading.
With its sleek design and bright colourways, it felt like the perfect investment. But I was held back after I realised it didn't have a backlight. I would just continue to use my old MacBook Air. But it turns out that didn't deter many others.
New reports this week show just how disruptive the Neo has been for the computer market. Not only has it mostly sold out, but new orders will not come until May. One of the reasons the Neo was at its more accessible price point was the A18 chip, made for the iPhone primarily, that powered it. Many had said tonnes of the A18 chips would be made. But even that chip is now almost exhausted, sending Apple contractors to increase their production.
In so many ways, it feels like the early days of Apple, where the most ardent fans camp outside Apple stores for release dates.
