Growing up in sub-Saharan Africa, technology seemed like a foreign concept. Ironically, as an adult, my life in so many ways is only possible because of technology. For one, I am writing this on a computer, trying to resist the urge to scroll through my phone. I also lead a team that writes about tech.

What I have come to realise is that the opportunity for tech to completely alter the trajectory of our lives is endless. It is why I am excited about the Techloy community, which we are launching today.

A community for people who love and believe in tech—from founders to builders, to fans, to investors—all of us communing together, trading banter, trying to make sense of our lives in a vastly changing world.

I can’t wait to banter with you. If you have not joined, here's this link to be a part of it.

📟 Consumer Tech

  • Why should you buy at the Beijing Auto Show this year? Perhaps some really affordable electric vehicles? We have a list of the best affordable EVs at the event that you could buy.
  • The Kenyan EV company BasiGo has ambitious plans to bring EVs to East Africa and later the continent writ large. Can the infrastructure—or lack thereof—that has inhibited local founders from building give way to the startup to solve the problem? We spoke to the product lead at the company about how it is navigating this.

🤖 AI Productivity

  • Joey Tran opened Claude Design with a full Pro plan token allocation. Five minutes later, 77% of it was gone. She hadn’t asked it to make anything yet. The AI design tool was reading through her design system files, converting colours and typography rules into tokens it could reuse. After that preparation phase finished, she finally asked it to generate five UI pages in HTML. That work consumed the remaining 23% of her weekly limit. Building the actual interface in total costs a fraction of what loading her brand guidelines did. This week, she opens up to us on what that experience was like.
  • Elon Musk and Sam Altman are now in court in a highly watched legal battle that could shape the future of AI. Musk has accused Altman of stealing a non-profit, OpenAI, for himself. Altman, of course, has painted Musk as an angry rival. We have all the details of their first week in court, including new revelations and Musk’s testimony.
  • My home for Anthropic shares? An American investor says count me in. A property in Mill Valley, California, listed for sale on Zillow, a real estate marketplace, is starting to turn heads—not just because of the property itself, but because of how the owner wants to sell it. Instead of asking for cash, the seller is looking for something far less traditional: shares in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind Claude. Read about why Storm Duncan, an investment banker, is choosing this route.

👨🏾‍💼 Career Mobility

Tom Archer had already spent years coding as a self-taught developer before he joined Microsoft, where for the last two decades he has worked as a senior AI engineer. Then he made a decision that many did not see coming. He went back to school to study computer science. As the AI wave came to town, he decided to go back again to get his master’s.

But Archer, who has been working as a senior software engineer since 1985, says things are changing. “In today’s competitive AI landscape, that theoretical foundation matters. It distinguishes engineers who can use tools from those who can build them,” he told Techloy.  Read the debate that is taking shape in tech offices around the world, between software engineers and the vibe coders that seem to have invaded their cafeteria.

As innovative as Apple was under Tim Cook, one area of modern technology remained out of reach for the company: blockchain. Long relegated to the fringes of mainstream tech products, the category has often operated in a league of its own. With John Ternus’ rise to the helm of the storied American tech giant, much of the industry conversation has focused on opportunities in AI. But a more unexpected frontier—one that could prove just as consequential and also innovative—is blockchain technology.
