A data centre dream meets an Indigenous roadblock
It turns out that navigating the digital future requires more than just servers.
TikTok’s been trying to make a big push into Brazil for a while now, but not everyone’s been on board. And it's not because they dislike TikTok itself. The company itself allegedly skipped some crucial steps.
The plan? Build a huge data center in Ceará, a northeastern state, to handle the region’s booming video traffic. The issue? The Anacé Indigenous community says they were never properly consulted before construction got the green light. By law, Indigenous groups are supposed to get “free, prior, and informed consultation” on projects that could affect their land or way of life.
With Brazil’s government known for holding Big Tech accountable, it will be interesting to see how things pan out for both parties. Will the courts side with Indigenous voices or with global tech ambitions?
