There was once a fairly simple way to choose between Google and Samsung.

You bought a Pixel if you cared about photography, clean software, and Google’s latest AI features. You bought a Galaxy if you wanted maximum performance, faster charging, more camera options, and a phone that could do almost everything.

The Pixel 11 Pro XL and Galaxy S26 Ultra make that decision less straightforward. Google has strengthened the Pixel’s hardware this year, without abandoning the software and AI features that define the series.

Samsung, meanwhile, continues to push the limits of what its flagship can do. And because both phones now start at $1,300, the question is no longer which one is cheaper.

It is which one is actually better.

/1. Design and display

Both phones follow the familiar big-screen flagship formula: flat displays, slim bezels and premium materials. The Pixel stands out more with its horizontal camera bar, while Samsung keeps its cleaner vertical camera arrangement.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is slightly larger at 6.9 inches and weighs 214g. The Pixel 11 Pro XL has a 6.8-inch display and is slightly smaller.

Where Google pulls ahead is brightness. The Pixel can reach 3,600 nits, compared with 2,600 nits on the Galaxy. That matters when you’re using the phone outdoors, particularly under harsh sunlight.

Samsung also has clever additional features, such as Privacy Display, which can limit what people sitting beside you can see on the screen. This is particularly useful for banking apps, messages, and other confidential information.

Winner: Pixel 11 Pro XL. For sheer visibility and brightness, though, Pixel takes this round.

/2. Performance

This is where Samsung’s hardware advantage becomes much clearer.

The Pixel 11 Pro XL uses Google’s Tensor G6, built on TSMC’s 2nm process. Google says it delivers major efficiency improvements and more processing power for AI workloads.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, a 3nm chip designed with a much stronger emphasis on raw CPU and GPU performance. Samsung also says the chip delivers up to a 19% CPU improvement over the previous generation.

The Pixel’s Tensor chip is designed around Google’s AI ambitions, but if your priorities include gaming, demanding apps and sustained performance, the Galaxy remains the safer choice.
