The newly released Pokémon Champions is already doing what every major Pokémon launch does: sparking excitement, debates, and a little chaos.
Pokémon Champions is a brand-new, free-to-play game focused purely on the strategy and thrill of Pokémon battles.
Designed for both new and experienced trainers, it features familiar mechanics like Pokémon types, Abilities, and moves. Currently available on Nintendo Switch, the game has already generated strong reactions from early players.
Here are 10 of the most common things players are saying right now:
1. “It’s missing a lot”
According to Centro Leaks on X, Pokémon Champions launched with major gaps. Players point to a smaller roster than Pokémon Stadium 2, performance issues (even on Switch 2), and the absence of local wireless battles.
Pokémon Champions TERRIBLE launch:

- Less Pokémon than Pokémon Stadium 2
- No 6v6 battles
- Performance issues even on Switch 2
- Slow, clunky menus
- Always online required, no more local wireless battles
- Tons of competitive items removed
- Rental Teams becoming completely… pic.twitter.com/tFfJdORX6H
2. The game actually looks great
Despite criticism, many players agree on one thing: the visuals are solid. Pokémon models, in particular, are getting praise, with Mega Scovillain standing out as a fan favourite.
Some might not agree, but one positive thing about Champions is I think most of the Pokémon look really good.

Especially Mega Scovillain! Apparently it’s not as bad functionally as people were assuming too pic.twitter.com/0EUGrE0682
3. Bugs are a real issue right now
Creator @MoxieBoosted noted that after seven hours of gameplay, there are noticeable bugs that could affect competitive play.
He also mentioned that these issues are already being tracked, which is partly why the game isn’t being used for in-person tournaments yet, including Indianapolis.
The game released full of bugs, and they absolutely need to be addressed before this can be played in any competitive capacity at tournaments. Luckily it seems like this was accounted for and thats why its not getting played in person until Indianapolis. Hopefully things improve.

4. No 6v6 battles is a big complaint
One of the loudest complaints is the absence of 6v6 battles. Even without a defined competitive format, players feel this should exist at least as a casual option.

5. Players think the first-ranked match might be bots
Some players on Reddit are questioning whether the first “ranked battle” is actually against AI rather than real players.

6. “Underwhelming” is a common verdict
A number of players are calling the game underwhelming due to limitations in game modes, Pokémon availability, items, and moves.
Some even argue that Pokémon Showdown offers a better overall experience.
Pokemon Champions is very underwhelming because of the massive limitations on game modes, Pokemon, items, and even attacks. Pokemon Showdown is vastly superior, I can use what I want there

7. The game might be surprisingly generous
There’s also debate around how generous the game is. One tutorial reportedly gives players eight Mega Stones for free, which has sparked discussion around balance and progression.

8. It feels rushed
Some players believe the game was released too early. Complaints include poor performance, missing held items like Choice Scarf and Choice Band, and a monetisation system that feels confusing.
The $7 entry option gives extra storage and early resources, but doesn’t align clearly with the premium currency system.

9. Players are betting on the mobile version
There’s a growing belief that the mobile release will be more polished. Some players expect fixes and improvements by then, although others worry the current reception could hurt its long-term success.

10. You can get free Mega Stones from transferred characters
Players have discovered that bringing certain characters—like Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, and Eternal Floette—from Home unlocks their Mega Stones for free.
This also applies to transfers from Pokémon Legends Z-A.
Remember, if you bring Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, and Eternal Floette from Home to Pokémon Champions, you can obtain their Mega Stones for free.
