Red Dead Redemption modern upgrade hits PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2
Red Dead Redemption’s upgrade brings 4K, HDR, and 60 FPS, with free digital upgrades and save transfers for existing owners.
If you thought the Wild West couldn’t get any prettier, think again. Rockstar Games’ classic Red Dead Redemption is getting a modern makeover for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, and the first gameplay footage on PS5 has already surfaced online.
The upgrade, officially launching December 2, is rolling out early in some regions, giving fans a sneak peek at what’s coming. GameRiot shared footage of the opening moments running at a smooth 60 frames per second on PS5. Rockstar promises the update will deliver enhanced image quality, HDR support, and resolutions up to 4K, making the familiar Western landscapes look sharper and more vibrant than ever.
For Xbox Series X|S players, there’s already a sweet deal in New Zealand. PureXbox reports the modern upgrade is 50% off there, though it’s unclear if this discount will hit other regions.
The update was developed by Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games for Rockstar. Players who own the older PS4, Xbox One, or Switch versions will get a free digital upgrade for their respective modern systems. On top of that, PS4 and Switch players can carry over saved game data, meaning you won’t have to start your journey over again.
It'll also be available on subscription services like PlayStation Plus and GTA+ starting December 2. As for Red Dead Redemption 2, rumours of similar next-gen upgrades have been swirling, but Rockstar hasn’t confirmed anything yet.
For fans of the series, this update isn’t just about graphics; it’s a chance to experience one of gaming’s most iconic Western adventures in a way that feels fresh, smooth, and more cinematic than ever. Also, the mobile version will be released on the 4th of December for players on the Netflix platform. Players can have access on either iOS or Android devices.
The takeaway
Compared to other modern game remasters, this Red Dead Redemption’s upgrade sits in the sweet spot between nostalgia and innovation. Unlike some remasters that focus solely on graphics, Rockstar has maintained the original game’s core experience while enhancing performance, visual fidelity, and compatibility with current consoles.
It’s a reminder that a thoughtful remaster can breathe new life into a beloved title without altering what made it special in the first place. For anyone who missed it the first time around or just wants to see the Old West shine like never before, this is shaping up to be one of the standout remasters of the year.
