Sony is asking UK smartphone buyers to look beyond flashy upgrades with its latest mid-range phone. The company has launched the Xperia 10 VIII at £549 (~$749), with sales expected to begin in mid to late September 2026.
Announced on August 25, the phone focuses on everyday improvements rather than a major redesign, including a display that Sony says is brighter than its predecessor, stronger stereo speakers and up to two days of battery life.
The Xperia 10 VIII also brings AI-powered Google features and Sony’s familiar lightweight design. At £549, however, it enters a crowded part of the UK smartphone market, making the question less about what Sony has added and more about whether these practical upgrades justify the price.

A brighter 120Hz display is the main upgrade
The Xperia 10 VIII has a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Its biggest screen change is brightness, with Sony claiming the panel is approximately 50% brighter than the Xperia 10 VII.
The phone also adjusts colours according to surrounding brightness. That should make maps, text and other content easier to see outdoors, particularly in direct sunlight.

Sony has also improved the front stereo speakers. The company says overall volume is around 15% higher than the previous model, while bass is more than 30% stronger.
Battery life focuses on long-term use
The battery is not the biggest change on the Xperia 10 VIII. Sony says the phone can deliver up to two days of battery life under its specified testing conditions.
