The Housemaid has added another success to its box office performance, topping HBO Max’s film rankings just days after its streaming debut.

Starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, the psychological thriller began streaming in the US on 9 October 2026, following a worldwide cinema run that brought in approximately $400.5 million.

Its theatrical performance made it one of Lionsgate’s biggest recent hits, and its early success on HBO Max suggests viewers are still interested in the story beyond cinemas. Watching it on the platform requires an HBO Max subscription, with prices varying by plan. This latest performance could also strengthen the case for continuing the story beyond the original film.

Set in the frozen Arctic, AMC’s historical horror series combines a doomed expedition, a mysterious creature and the slow collapse of human survival.

How The Housemaid Took Over HBO Max

According to SlashFilm’s report on the film’s streaming performance, The Housemaid reached the top of HBO Max’s US film charts on 11 October, just two days after its arrival.

The ranking was based on FlixPatrol’s streaming chart tracking, rather than official viewing figures released by HBO Max, so it shows the film’s position rather than the number of people watching it.

This is not the film’s first successful streaming release. It debuted on Starz in April 2026, where it became the service’s best-performing Pay-One film launch at the time. TheWrap reported that the film set records for streaming viewership and subscriber acquisition during its first week, with female viewers driving much of the interest.

Why Audiences Keep Watching

Directed by Paul Feig and adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, The Housemaid follows Millie, a young woman who accepts a live-in housekeeping job with the wealthy Winchester family. Nina Winchester, played by Seyfried, initially appears to offer Millie a fresh start, but the job soon exposes a dangerous web of secrets and manipulation.

The film’s appeal lies partly in how it uses that familiar domestic setting. A wealthy household should feel comfortable and secure, but Millie’s new job becomes increasingly unsettling as she discovers that the people around her are not what they seem. Sweeney and Seyfried’s performances also give viewers two characters whose changing relationship drives the suspense.

Its theatrical audience offered an early clue to the film’s potential. Women made up around 70% of its opening-weekend audience in North America. That suggests the film connected with a clear audience before streaming made it easier to watch at home.

A $400 Million Cinema Run Gives It A Strong Foundation

According to Box Office Mojo, The Housemaid earned approximately $400.5 million worldwide after opening in cinemas in December 2025. Its domestic opening weekend brought in around $19 million, making its eventual total a significant increase on that initial result.
