Colleen Hoover’s Verity is finally leaving your pages and heading to the big screen. The psychological thriller arrives in cinemas worldwide on October 2, 2026, with Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett leading the cast.
Directed by Michael Showalter, the Amazon MGM Studios film runs for about 1 hour and 54 minutes and is rated R in the US for sexual content, language, violence and bloody images.
If you have read Hoover’s bestselling 2018 novel, the real appeal is seeing how the filmmakers bring its unsettling story to life. A writer, a disturbing manuscript and a complicated family relationship become the centre of a thriller where you are never sure what is real.

What Is Verity About?
The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, played by Dakota Johnson, a struggling writer who receives an unusual opportunity when she is hired to finish the bestselling book series of Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway.
Verity has been left unable to speak or move after an accident, leaving her husband, Jeremy Crawford, played by Hartnett, looking for someone who can complete her unfinished work. Lowen moves into the Crawford family home to study Verity's writing, but soon discovers a disturbing autobiographical manuscript.
The manuscript changes the job completely. Instead of simply trying to finish another author's books, Lowen begins questioning what happened inside the Crawford family and whether the woman in front of her is really as helpless as she appears. This is where the film's central tension comes from because Lowen now has to work out whether she has discovered the truth or stepped into another piece of fiction.
