Why I won't be spending $700 on the PS5 Pro, even though GTA 6 might soon run at 60fps
Will you upgrade?
I’ve been wrestling with the idea of upgrading to a PS5 Pro, especially with all the buzz surrounding GTA 6. But even with the performance rumours, I’m not sold.
A well-known leaker named Detective Seeds claims that Rockstar and Sony are collaborating to make sure GTA 6 hits 60 fps(frames per second) on the PS5 Pro, thanks to a performance mode update expected in May 2026. Meanwhile, the standard PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will reportedly remain capped at 30 fps.
That has understandably stirred reactions among fans. For some, 60 frames per second is the holy grail. But based on the same leak, it’s not completely off the table for base PS5 owners.
There are suggestions that Rockstar and Sony are also optimizing other titles, like the 2018 Red Dead Redemption 2, for 60 fps. Fans have been asking for that patch for years, and it would make sense to roll it out for existing consoles. Modders and hackers have already achieved it through exploits, proving the hardware is capable.
This raises the obvious question. If Red Dead Redemption 2 can pull off 60 fps on the base PS5, why not GTA 6? Both games are graphically demanding, but they aren’t worlds apart in terms of technical ambition. The idea that one needs premium hardware while the other might not seems inconsistent.
As someone who plans to play GTA 6 no matter what, I don’t really care whether it runs at 30 or 60 fps on console. Sure, I’d love to see both options available, and no, I’m not saying 30 fps is ideal. But I’m definitely not paying $700 for a PS5 Pro just to get smoother animation.
In fact, GTA 6 might be one of the few games where I’m fine with a cinematic 4K 30 fps experience, especially if that means avoiding an expensive hardware upgrade. Maybe that’s just my excitement for the eventual PC release talking, because we all know that’s where the uncapped frame rates will shine.
Historically, Rockstar launches its games at 30 fps on console and adds performance options later. That was the case with GTA 5 on PS4 and PS5. But this time, it looks like they’re aiming to have a high frame rate mode ready from day one, at least on the PS5 Pro.
For Sony, this strategy could drive interest in the PS5 Pro. But for many of us, it’s a wait-and-see situation. Performance is important, but value matters too. And until the base PS5 is truly left behind, I’ll stick with what I have. GTA 6 will still look incredible, even at 30 frames per second.
