Amazon to shut down Freevee app in August
You can still watch Freevee content on Prime Video for free.
Freevee never got the spotlight that other streaming services did, but for anyone who stumbled onto it, it offered something pretty rare: solid, free content with no subscription required. Now, Amazon is shutting down the Freevee app in August 2025.
But this isn’t a shutdown in the traditional sense. The content isn’t going away—it’s just being absorbed into Prime Video. If you open the Freevee app now, you’ll be greeted with an in-app notice announcing the shutdown, confirming that the app will no longer be available after August.
The message directs users to continue watching the same free content through the Prime Video app, where Freevee’s programming will live on under a “Watch for Free” section. Freevee, which began as IMDb TV in 2019 and rebranded in 2022, offers originals like Jury Duty and Bosch: Legacy with a presence in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Austria.

Amazon claims to be shutting down Freevee as part of an effort to streamline its streaming ecosystem. Late last year, the company signaled its intention to retire the Freevee brand to eliminate platform overlap and make content discovery more seamless.
So, instead of splitting attention between two apps, Amazon is bringing everything into one place. It’s a move designed to simplify access for users and give the company more control over how it delivers and monetizes ad-supported content.
Viewers who used Freevee without a Prime subscription will still have access to the same library. They’ll just need to use the Prime Video app and log in with a basic Amazon account. Nothing is going behind a paywall.
The content remains free, including Amazon Originals and live channels. The only real change for users is the shift in interface—from Freevee’s lightweight, focused design to the broader, more complex Prime Video environment.
Besides, Amazon’s decision also follows a pattern seen across the streaming industry. Platforms like Peacock, Roku, and even Netflix have increasingly blurred the lines between free and paid tiers, offering ad-supported options under the same umbrella as their premium content.
By folding Freevee into Prime Video, Amazon reduces the costs of maintaining a separate brand and infrastructure while boosting the reach of its advertising business.
