Hideo Kojima's relationship with Xbox just got considerably more interesting.
Kojima Productions has announced that it's expanding its partnership with Xbox to work on PHYSINT, the studio's upcoming action-espionage game. The project was already known to be in development, but this announcement confirms that Xbox will now play a publishing role alongside Kojima Productions.
The move comes after PlayStation Studios stepped away from its collaboration with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT. Kojima said the studio was unexpectedly notified in mid-June that PlayStation would cancel the project, prompting Kojima Productions to spend the following three months looking for a new partner.
That makes PHYSINT the second major Kojima Productions project tied directly to Xbox, following OD, the mysterious horror game being developed in collaboration with Xbox.

Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox, said the company is honoured that Kojima Productions chose to work with Xbox on PHYSINT, while also pointing to Kojima's willingness to experiment with established game conventions.
“We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT”, Sharma said.
Kojima described the announcement as an expansion of the relationship that began with OD.
“This expands our relationship with Xbox beyond OD,” Sharma added.
