Six months ago, I switched from Samsung to a Google Pixel for two reasons. The first was all the hype around Pixel cameras and just how good they supposedly are. The second, and probably the more important reason, was software updates.

Google builds both Android and Pixel phones, so Pixels are always first to receive major Android updates and new features. That’s a big selling point, until you remember that being first also means you’re often the first to encounter the bugs.

That was exactly my experience with Android 17.

The update didn’t completely break my Pixel 8, but it did introduce enough strange behaviour to turn what should have been an exciting upgrade into a week of troubleshooting. Thankfully, most of those issues have since disappeared through subsequent updates.

After living with Android 17 for several weeks, here’s what surprised me most.
