Most Nigerians seem to download more banking apps than they need. Ask ten people why they have OPay, Moniepoint, and other fintech apps on the same phone, and many will struggle to give you a clear answer beyond "I just do."

I used to be one of those people, until I stopped and looked at what each app on my phone was actually doing for me, and whether it had earned its place there.

But you can't really blame people, though. Nigeria's fintech scene has grown so quickly, with over 430 registered fintech companies in the country, a 70% jump from only 255 in early 2024. So, it's pretty easy to assume every app does more or less the same thing. The reality is that they don't.
