  • Apple and Samsung snagged all ten spots on the list with an equal share of 5 each
  • Growing premiumization trend with 7 out of the 10 top phones exceeding $600
  • All top 10 phones boast 5G for the first time, marking a market shift.

The smartphone market in Q1 2024 was a story of two tech giants and their relentless grip on the top.

Apple and Samsung snagged all ten spots on the global best-selling smartphone list, leaving no room for competition per data released by Counterpoint Research.

Apple's iPhone 15 lineup wasn't just a top contender; it practically owned the stage, replicating a similar success from the previous year. All four iPhone 15 variants, alongside the iPhone 14, secured spots within the top ten. The iPhone 15 Pro Max took the best-seller title for the first time outside its usual holiday sales window.

The Pro models were a particular highlight, skyrocketing in popularity and capturing half of Apple's Q1 2024 sales – a significant jump from 24% in the same period of 2020. This Pro dominance extends to revenue as well, contributing over 60% of Apple's smartphone sales value.

Samsung wasn't about to be left behind. Its Galaxy S24 series secured two top ten spots, with the Ultra variant leading the charge. This is an improvement from the previous year when only one of its flagship phones made the top ten list. This strong showing can be attributed to Samsung's bold move – being first to market with smartphones boasting generative AI (GenAI) technology. Its other budget options such as the A series also resonated with consumers, giving Samsung a competitive edge.

Another significant highlight in the quarter was the shift away from budget dominance. Seven out of the ten best-sellers (5 of which were iPhones) carried hefty price tags, exceeding $600 showcasing a growing preference for premium feature-packed offerings. Cutting-edge chipsets, smoother displays, and premium materials like titanium are proving to be wallet-openers for consumers.

Adding to this, all ten top-selling phones boast 5G capabilities for the first time in the quarter – a clear sign of the market's evolving expectations.

Overall, Apple and Samsung locked down the top ten best-selling smartphones in Q1 2024. This dominance wasn't just about brand loyalty, it was a clear signal of a consumer preference for powerful and feature-rich smartphones.
