As companies pay more to integrate artificial intelligence into their businesses to help employees work faster, knowing how much they spend on AI rarely tells if they are getting enough value to justify the cost.

For that reason, Anthropic is giving businesses a way to find out with “smart reports,” a new Claude tool for enterprise users, which tracks how employees use AI, what they produce, and where money may be going to waste.

According to Anthropic’s help guide, a smart report sets the work a team got done beside what it cost at list price, shows where sessions stall, and points out repeated patterns that could be packaged as shared skills.

Claude Cowork vs ChatGPT: Which Fits Your Workflow?
ChatGPT remains my everyday AI, but Claude Cowork proved better suited to some of the most demanding parts of my work.

How Smart Report Works

The tool samples and analyzes team conversation transcripts of up to the last 28 days by grouping the work into specific workstreams or output types (such as technical docs or code), tracks costs, and flags workflow friction or bottlenecks (like failed tool calls). The tool also flags “inefficiencies” to employers, including sessions that produced nothing usable or were personal or off-topic.

This means employers can make a report by selecting a team, a time range of up to the last 28 days, the Claude products to include, focus areas for analysis, and any custom questions they want Claude to answer while analyzing the transcripts.

While it helps firms understand adoption and plan their investment in Claude, the tool isn’t “designed and should not be used for evaluating individual performance or making employment decisions.”

What Employers Can See

Even though the tool tracks how employees use AI, what employers can see is limited. By default, the report shows “User” in place of a name and hides session IDs, and while a company can switch on an option that lets viewers reveal names, it is off by default, and every reveal is logged.

Personal conversations appear only as a count and a cost, with no summaries, and sessions involving topics such as health, union activity, or political views are used only in aggregate.

Work conversations are different, because they can be opened from the report with a summary of what happened.
