A State Department employee identified in court filings as Gregory Goe has spent eight years on hormone replacement therapy to treat gender dysphoria. His Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, provided through his federal job, recently stopped covering the treatment.
His surgeon has also refused to schedule a previously planned procedure without insurance coverage, leaving Goe facing more than $100,000 in out-of-pocket costs.Goe is one of five federal workers who filed a proposed class action lawsuit against the Trump administration on Monday over exactly this policy.
What The Lawsuit Argues
According to the Washington Post's coverage of the filing, the suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, was brought by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation alongside law firm Correia & Puth on behalf of five federal employees, including a U.S. Postal Service worker identified as Patrick Poe, whose transgender daughter lost coverage for her care.
The plaintiffs argue that the Office of Personnel Management violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars employers from discriminating against workers because of sex, when it instructed federal insurance carriers in January to strip coverage for gender transition care.
