Google says 1 billion people opened the Gemini app last month. That's roughly one in eight people on Earth. Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, calls it the fastest climb to that number of any product in Google's history, including Search.
It looks like Gemini just passed its chatbot rival, ChatGPT, but looking closer, the two companies behind them turn out to be measuring completely different things.
/1. The climb: 400 million to 1 billion in 15 months
Google put Gemini at 400 million monthly active users in May 2025, meaning that the users opened the app at least once that month. That climbed to 650 million by October, 750 million in February 2026, 900 million when Pichai cited the figure onstage at Google I/O in May, and past 950 million in Alphabet's July earnings report. It crossed a billion about three weeks later, on August 11.
/2. The ChatGPT comparison doesn't quite add up
OpenAI confirmed on August 6 that ChatGPT has 1 billion weekly users, in a post announcing updates to GPT-5.6. Gemini's billion, by contrast, is a monthly count. Comparing a weekly number to a monthly one isn't the clean head-to-head it looks like.

/3. Most people are talking to it, not typing
63% of Gemini users now talk to the app instead of typing, according to Google's post, with a growing share going voice-only. Parents lean on it even harder: they're 43% more likely than the average user to rely on voice for everyday tasks. That's a shift from a text box toward something closer to a phone call.
/4. iPhone and Mac users showed up too
